MEDICAL SCRIBE
A medical scribe's primary duties are to follow a physician through their work day and chart patient encounters in real-time using a medical office's Electronic Medical Record. Scribes manage and sort medical documents within the EMR system, and assist with electronic prescribing. Medical scribes can be thought of as data care managers, enabling physicians to focus on patient care during office hours. Medical scribes, by handling data management tasks for physicians in real-time, free the physician to increase patient contact time and give them more time to manage complex medical problems.
Scribes also assist the practitioners in navigating the EMR and in locating information such as test results and lab results. They can support work flow and documentation for medical record coding. They follow the same code of conduct as everyone who works in a medical office as far as privacy is concerned and are HIPAA compliant.
An increasing body of research has shown the use of medical scribes is associated with improved overall physician productivity, cost- and time-savings, and patient satisfaction.
My scribes are ALL college graduates who have taken a pre-med curriculum and who plan on applying to medical /PA school during the time that they are with me. My goal is to give them a thorough immersion in primary care and get them into medical/PA school. So far ALL have been accepted. I am incredibly proud of them and their efforts. I appreciate the hard work they have put in helping me and my patients.
My current scribe Sam, has successfully completed the Harvard Extension School Post Bac pre-med program and has been accepted at Physician Assistant school in 2025
My previous scribes include:
Sophie, is now a Physician Assistant in Austen, Texas
Dylan, a graduate of Drexel School of Medicine, is now in his second year of surgical residency at Boston Medical Center.
Kellen, a graduate of Michigan State Osteopathic Medical School, is now in his final year of his family practice residency in Corvallis, Oregon.
Leah, a graduate of Rush Medical School in Chicago, has now completed her residency in family medicine and is now working as a doctor in NYC.
Laura, a graduate of Florida State Medical School, who was my first scribe, has completed her residency in family practice.
